"Truth does flourish as the rose, the lilies do grow among the thorns.." George Fox wrote these hauntingly beautiful, very comforting words of encouragement to imprisoned Quakers in 1663. This photo of lilies growing in profusion around a fully opened rose, with stems in the background that look like jail bars, fits this quote perfectly! Photo by Marie Hicks © 2011 All Rights Reserved
My all-consuming passion is art. It's very likely that it's in my DNA. I credit my Italian heritage for it, since my ancestry traces back through some of Italy's most noted artistic communities, primarily Florence, Tuscany, and Naples. Obsessed with capturing the beauty of nature from an early age, I loved drawing, painting, and creating books about birds, flowers, and animals as a child. Encouraged by my parents and teachers, I expanded my skills over time, setting my sights on a career in publication design. A defining moment in my life came in the form of a Pinhole Photography class I took while earning my BFA in Graphic Design at the University of Georgia's highly esteemed Lamar Dodd School of Fine Art. . Today, this popular flower can be found in a range of colors – from white to golden yellow, orange to apricot, pink to red, lavender and purple. Symbolizing friendship and devotion, the alstroemeria’s leaves grow upside down, with the leaf twisting as it grows out from the stem, so that the bottom is facing upwards – much like the twists, turns and growth of our friendship..love it!! Well done Marie!

Hello Jolanta, I forgot to mention that I have another image "Radiant Sunflowers and Peruvian Lilies" in my FAA gallery with the lilies in a deep coppery orange and yellow! They've been showing up a lot in my life recently so that must be a good sign! :)) Thanks again for your nice post!!

esembling a miniature lily, alstroemeria, often called the Peruvian Lily or Lily of the Incas, was named after its discoverer, Baron Claus von Alstromer, a Swedish baron who collected the seeds on a trip to Spain in 1753. Today, this popular flower can be found in a range of colors – from white to golden yellow, orange to apricot, pink to red, lavender and purple. Symbolizing friendship and devotion, the alstroemeria’s leaves grow upside down, with the leaf twisting as it grows out from the stem, so that the bottom is facing upwards – much like the twists, turns and growth of our friendships. One of my favourite flowers..and the rose looks glorious with them..just beautiful! Well done Marie...

Wow Jolanta! I really love the wonderful insight you provided on these amazing lilies, especially the interesting analogy between the growing patterns of their leaves and the growth of friendships! That is so cool! Special thanks for your kind comments!!
